Evidence of Cascading Subglacial Water Flow at Jutulstraumen Glacier (Antarctica) Derived From Sentinel?1 and ICESat?2 Measurements

چکیده
Migration of subglacial water underneath thick Antarctic ice is difficult to observe directly but known influence flow dynamics. Here, we analyze a 6-year time series displacement maps from differential Sentinel-1 SAR interferometry (DInSAR) in the upstream region Jutulstraumen Glacier. Our results reveal short-term (between 12 days and 1 year) interconnected subsidence- uplift events surface, which interpret as pressure response drainage filling lakes. This indicates an episodic cascade-like transport with longer quiescent phases dynamically stable glacial setting. Abrupt appear DInSAR are confirmed by ICESat-2 altimetry. The can be traced for 1-year period along 175 km path. We able migration unprecedented spatial temporal resolution, providing new observational baseline further develop hydrological models.

Connected subglacial lake drainage beneath Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica
We present conventional and swath altimetry data from Cryosat-2 revealing a system of subglacial lakes that drained between June 2013 and January 2014 under the central part of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica. Much of the 10 drainage happened in less than six months, with an apparent connection between three lakes spanning more than 130 km. Hydropotential analysis of the glacier bed shows a l...
متن کاملRapid subglacial erosion beneath Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica
[1] We present measurements of ice thickness, gravimetry and surface elevation on Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica, separated by a period of 49 years. At one station, on the main trunk of the glacier we measured a surface elevation lowering with no significant change in ice thickness. We interpret these as indicating subglacial erosion of 31.8 13.4 m at this location, at a mean rate over th...
متن کاملFlow dynamics of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica
Force-balance calculations on Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, reveal large spatial variations in the along-flow component of driving stress with corresponding sticky spots that are stationary over time. On the large scale, flow resistance is partitioned between basal (80%) and lateral (20%) drag. Ice flow is due mostly to basal sliding and concentrated vertical shear in the basal ice layers, i...
متن کاملBacterial diversity associated with Blood Falls, a subglacial outflow from the Taylor Glacier, Antarctica.
Blood Falls is the surface manifestation of brine released from below the Taylor Glacier, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. Geochemical analyses of Blood Falls show that this brine is of a marine origin. The discovery that 74% of clones and isolates from Blood Falls share high 16S rRNA gene sequence homology with phylotypes from marine systems supports this contention. The bacterial 16S rRNA gen...
متن کاملSeismic observations of transient subglacial water-flow beneath MacAyeal Ice Stream, West Antarctica
[1] New seismic observations of harmonic tremors beneath MacAyeal Ice Stream, West Antarctica are reported. Each of the two tremor events that we recorded during a six week period had sustained arrival of 3 Hz energy for approximately 10 minutes. During that time the source location migrated a few kilometers. The harmonic nature of the tremors is interpreted as the result of resonance in subgla...
